Haden's Virtual Delivery Room

On February 16, 2001, the Virtual Delivery Room opened for business. A form was available where anyone who came to the web site could enter a comment, and all the comments were displayed like a running conversation.

This function was really just conceived as a way to keep family and friends up-to-date, but it turned out to be a much more useful feature: it kept Kitty and Suman occupied while waiting for the big event, and, with much more participation from family and friends than was expected, it really turned into a fun chat that helped everyone feel they were part of the birth, and showed Kitty and Suman how many people out there cared for them.

Here is the transcription, with a little detail thrown in! The description is slanted from Steph's point of view for now, but will someday, hopefully, be updated with Suman and Kitty's recollections. Thanks again to everyone who participated! This document, and the experience everyone had as it grew, will hopefully be one of the precious mementos of Haden's birth!

At 11:29 pm, Catherine M. LeGault said: Mama C. is standing by. i gave birth to Kitty when I was exactly the age she is now. She was my sixth child and she took four days of off-and-on labor to get here. worth every minute of it!! I hope we'll be able to say that she was given an easier way.
At 6:40 am, Bob LeGault said: We're praying for you Kitty, Suman and ...um, Urk.
At 7:11 am, Steph said: We're connected! More in a minute...
At 7:13 am, Catherine said: Kitty, Mom is here...Dad got up at 4:30 instead of his usual 6 A.M. I've got th emusic on...you're something else, Steph!
At 7:13 am, Steph said: We're in room 54 at OHSU in beautiful Portland, Oregon. A stream of people have been in and out so far, taking blood, weighing Kitty, giving her an IV. Suman is taking video of the whole process, plus the stunning view from up here on pill hill. Now let's see what Su has to say about the whole thing.
At 7:15 am, Suman said: Hey Mom, You nervous?
At 7:18 am, Catherine said: We'll keep in touch...I have to fold the wash that Dad did this morning. I actually got three hours of sleep last night. How did Kit & Su do?
At 7:20 am, Kitty said: I just had an IV(heparin loc) put in, making it a wee bit tender to type. All 's well so far. So excited to finally meet the boy on the outside. Also anxious to get a drink of water. Not allowed to drink anything prior to surgery. My room has a beautiful view of Portland and the river looking down at OMSI.
At 7:23 am, Steph said: I'll try to take some time now to describe the room and what's going on. Kiity and Su are inspecting every cupboard and door. The shower is pretty utilitarian.
At 7:33 am, Steph said: The room is all beige, with a stylized leaf pattern on the wallpaper, beige and turquoise tapestry covered pillows and chairs, and a green and mauve border around the top of the walls, with grape leaves or something like that.
At 7:34 am, Steph said: Suman just got out the "real" camera, taking some actual film-based pictures for his parents. It's a smallish room, with a big window, so flash photography is sort of hard.
At 7:34 am, Steph said: Kitty just went to the bathroom.
At 7:40 am, Kitty said: Prior to checking in to my room I stopped in at the delivery floor, as directed by the Dr. There I ran in to Suzie, a nurse who knows Val from her church. She did the baptism for Michael. LJ and Marisa's boy. This morning at 4am I was awoken by a dream. In it I was reading a magazine byline where it was written "Rolling Stone calls Lung Mother the greatest effort to come out of the Pacific Northwest since Everclear and Pearl Jam" In my sleep state I thought, 'wait, what was the name of that band?' How ironic and telling: Lung Mother. It was the lung maturity that determined Urk's fitness to enter the outer world at this early date.
At 7:42 am, Steph said: There's no coffee here. Su and I are bummed.
At 7:43 am, Steph said: Su is videotaping the clock. Kitty is calling her Mom on the cell phone, but apparently she's online..
At 7:43 am, Steph said: Everyone seems to be holding up well.. Su is thirsty too, he hasn't had a drink since Kitty's last one. Isn't that sweet?
At 7:44 am, Steph said: I can see Kitty's butt everytime she turns around in that hospital gown.
At 7:50 am, Steph said: Kitty's talking about work, and Su is rubbing her shoulders. We're all watching the downtown traffic. What an amazing view we have from up here!
At 7:52 am, Steph said: Nurse Kristin has apparently forgotten to bring Kitty's nametag. Kitty says she needs one so they can identify her in the morgue later. Ah, the black humor people use when something important is about to happen! Suman is going to find out what happened. He would have called, but the phone line is tied up by this laptop.
At 7:53 am, Steph said: Kitty is talking to her sister on the phone, I think it's Val. Yes, she's telling her the story about the person who did Michael's baptism.
At 7:55 am, Steph said: Suman just checked out the "catering." I brought lots of snacks, because they said to in childbirth class. Su says I brought all the right food. We have beef jerky, strawberry fig newtons, chocolate shortbread cookies, two kind of chip-and-dip, some candy bars, and some tropical lifesavers for Kitty.
At 7:56 am, Steph said: Now the traffic's getting thick.
At 7:56 am, Catheine said: Su asks am I nervous. All I can say is that my nervous system won't let me think of anything else. In days gone by I'd have been on my third Manhattan.
At 7:57 am, Suman said: If it weren't this early in the morning, I'd be on my third manhattan!
At 7:58 am, Doreen said: K & S. Deep breaths, both of you. Soon you'll be in heaven, looking down at your own angel. I hope he pukes on you for calling him Urk up til now. Much love to you both..err..all three of you.
At 7:59 am, Steph said: Su and Kitty are figuring out what time it is in India. Suman's wondering if he should call his parents. No, they'll wait, because they're probably asleep.
At 8:00 am, Suman said: What do you think he'll do to us when we name him Urk for real?
At 8:06 am, Kitty said: Steph stepped out for a smoke and some coffee. Not because she had to but because, as the Doula, she's obliged to provide comfort for the parents. That selfless sweetheart. I also think our anxious anticipation was making her nervous. If I still smoked, I'd have one.
At 8:09 am, Catherine said: Should I not stay online all the time. I'm sorry I missed Kit's phone call. I'll close off, get a cup of coffee, and wait for another call...if it doesn't interfere with the schedule.
At 8:20 am, Steph said: Dr. Vincent is here. He's telling us about the website he made for his wedding. And, discussing the upcoming procedure a bit.
At 8:22 am, Steph said: I'm sorry, Catherine, I didn't mean to sow confusion about the phone call!
At 8:22 am, Steph said: Whoops, his name is Dr. Vinson. I've been spelling it wrong all along.
At 8:26 am, Steph said: I found a smoking area, for my awful habit. The people inside the smoking room said something about our awful weather, and I said "no, it's a beautiful day! We have a baby coming." They looked at me, smoking, and I said "Oh, it's not ME." And then one lady asked if it was my daughter having the baby! Hmph, I'm only 30. Hehehehe
At 8:27 am, Doreen said: If you do name him Urk for real, I'm sure he'll be overjoyed, and hardly ever puke on you anymore. I would guess it will also take until he's 8 to sleep through the night, but that's a small sacrifice, right? *grin* Not much longer now..how you all holding up?
At 8:27 am, Steph said: Kitty's on the phone with Catherine now.
At 8:27 am, Val said: OK, now that I've caught up on the reading: I left a message for Eljay and Marisa to check out the chat site. I emailed Catherine to hit the "refresh" button. And I'm just so excited this is happening! And, Kit and Su, the heaven Doreen refers to is just metaphoric, so don't think you're getting out of any diapers or little league or fender benders :-)
At 8:38 am, Catherine said: here I sit, with my coffee and cheeses sandwich after having talked to Kit on her cerll phone and getting Val's e-mail telling me how to use the "refresh" button. This is mind-boggling.
At 8:38 am, Kitty said: The doctor was just in and said that the procedure for now is to tell me it's only going to be a few more minutes, for a few more hours. Then he noticed that they left my tourniquet on from putting in my IV an hour ago.
At 8:38 am, Dori said: What's going on? You left off at 8:27. Any word from the Doc yet?
At 8:38 am, Catherine said: here I sit, with my coffee and cheeses sandwich after having talked to Kit on her cerll phone and getting Val's e-mail telling me how to use the "refresh" button. This is mind-boggling.
At 8:40 am, Dori said: Please give Suman and Kit my best. They will make wonderful parents.
At 8:40 am, Steph said: They may let us take the laptop into the delivery room! I doubt they will have a phone line we can plug into, but who knows! We'll be taking pictures, at least.
At 8:41 am, Suman said: Thanks for Costco, Dori! Send us a bill.
At 8:42 am, Suman said: The doctor says Kate can't eat anything until after she farts. True story.
At 8:43 am, Steph said: Apologies to everyone who sat through the 11 minute silence at 8:27. My fingers got tired. :)
At 8:44 am, Steph said: Suman is trying to call his mom, but accidentally called Brian. Now AT&T is calling him.
At 8:45 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina is here. She says everything's pretty much in place. She doesn't know what time they'll be ready, but says the first surgery of the day (which Kitty is) is about 10 am.
At 8:46 am, Nurse Christina said: Good luck!
At 8:48 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina just referred to Suman as "your husband, I'm assuming.." Su says "I'm her cousin. We're from Kentucky, we do it like that with our cousins."
At 8:51 am, Steph said: Every nurse that comes in here asks the same questions. Shouldn't they be writing this down in some central area?
At 8:51 am, Steph said: Suman's mom's phone line is busy.
At 8:53 am, Steph said: Kitty is starving and thirsty! I can't believe we have another hour to go, at best. Nurse Christina told us that for "scheduled" C-sections, there's usually no wait. At which point Su told her this WAS scheduled, which confused her. No, really, everyone here seems competent, I'm just relating details.
At 8:57 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina is answering all Kitty's questions. Suman has a little day bed here that they're going to bring sheets for.
At 8:57 am, Kitty said: Urk's got the hiccups.
At 8:57 am, Steph said: Now we have nothing to do but wait for an hour.
At 9:03 am, Steph said: We're listening to music now. I made a Birthday CD last night, we're listening to "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed, the acoustic version. It's making Kitty cry.
At 9:04 am, Steph said: I forgot to mention that I brought granola bars. Kitty's looking through the food covetously.
At 9:04 am, Steph said: Suman is videotaping the food.
At 9:05 am, Catherine said: At last I figured out the "refresh" button without going through what you wouldn't believe I've been going through to get back to where I just was! Kit, in every battle - your faather has often said - you "hurry up and wait."
At 9:05 am, Catherine said: At last I figured out the "refresh" button without going through what you wouldn't believe I've been going through to get back to where I just was! Kit, in every battle - your faather has often said - you "hurry up and wait."
At 9:06 am, Steph said: Now we're listening to "When I Grow Up" by Garbage. Get it? It's a theme CD.
At 9:06 am, Kitty said: I picked a heck of a time to give up smoking crack.
At 9:06 am, Catherine said: I guess I haven't solved it yet. Why do I get myself twice?
At 9:07 am, Steph said: I can't believe my husband Peter hasn't logged in yet! He must be working hard.
At 9:07 am, Val said: Tic toc! When did you get to eat last, Kit? Su, are you fasting also? If Su farts can he say it was Kit? How can she fart without eating something? Inquiring minds want to know.
At 9:07 am, Karen said: Wishing you well, but I'm not likely to participate much. It's a little weird for old fashioned me. Too voyeristic, like those intrusive tv shows. I'll just let you do your thing, but know that my heart is with you. I love you. Sounds like you're having fun. XOXOXOXO
At 9:08 am, Steph said: Now we're listening to Frank Sinatra sing "Happy Birthday."
At 9:10 am, Catherine said: Hey Karen, I have a picture on our dresser of you holding newborn Catlyn. It came waith your description of how everyone in the family took part in the birth! How oldfaashioned can you be?
At 9:12 am, Steph said: Catherine, after you click "post comment", then click the refresh button on the page. When you just want to check for new comments, click the refresh button at the top of the screen. Hope this isn't too complex! We can remove any duplicate entries later if you'd like.
At 9:13 am, Kitty said: How do I fart without eating? It's all about peristalsis.
At 9:14 am, Steph said: Kitty is wondering whom to ask about her lactation specialist.
At 9:17 am, Steph said: Karen, Kitty says you don't have to participate if you don't want. Also, she wants me to tell you that I have congenital anosmia, i.e. total lack of sense of smell, like you. :)
At 9:18 am, Steph said: Now we're listening to "Birthday" by the Beatles. Before this was "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison. Kitty saw two cars almost have a fender bender right below this room.
At 9:19 am, Suman said: Where's all the s**t we can steal? There's nothing good in here.
At 9:21 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina is here to start Kitty on some fluids. Good! She was feeling very dehydrated.
At 9:22 am, Steph said: Bed goes up, bed goes down! That's a quote from the Simpsons. Pete will understand it.
At 9:23 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina says we only have 15 minutes to go! And that we'll be downstairs (in surgery/recovery) for about 2 hours.
At 9:24 am, karen said: You go girl! (I'm sure that was SOMEONE's current phrase they're most tired of hearing)
At 9:24 am, karen said: You go girl! (I'm sure that was SOMEONE's current phrase they're most tired of hearing)
At 9:25 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina asked if Kitty wants to walk to surgery, or have a wheelchair. Kitty says walk. Now we're listening to "Cat's in the Cradle." Does anyone know who this song is by? We can't remember.
At 9:27 am, Steph said: Now we're listening to Marilyn Monroe sing "Happy Birthday Mr. President." This is my prophetic statement.
At 9:29 am, Steph said: Kitty is laying on the bed now, being hydrated with a saline IV. She says she feels less thirsty just knowing she's getting fluids.
At 9:30 am, Steph said: I got coffee for Su and I, and now I have to go to the bathroom (talk about details!).. so there will be no updates for 3-4 minutes. :)
At 9:33 am, Suman said: I think these are the longest minutes I've ever spent.
At 9:36 am, karen said: So, Su, are you going to be in there .... rooting around in Kit's open cavity, biting the umbilical cord, eating the placenta?
At 9:38 am, Dori said: Hang in there dad, pretty soon you will sleep deprived, midnight feedings and lots of dirty diapers. The best thing about all of this is that you will really enjoy it. There is nothing in the world like little babies. Sure wish I could pop some more out. I will follow the site all day
At 9:38 am, Val said: Are you in the "OHSU Hospital" or the "Mark Hatfield" off Sam Jackson Park Rd, or "Doernbecher" off SW Veteran's Rd?
At 9:40 am, Suman said: Of course I'll be in there--the OR's got the largest cooler in the entire hospital.
At 9:41 am, Val said: Cat's in the Cradle by James Taylor?
At 9:41 am, Suman said: We're in OHSU--14th floor.
At 9:42 am, dori said: Kitty, I can't forget you. Before you know it you will be back in your room with everyone you hold dear. I am so looking forward to seeing the baby. I wish you my very best and hurry up and fart.
At 9:43 am, Kitty said: Wrong Val!!
At 9:44 am, Val said: No no it's Harry Chapin!!!
At 9:45 am, Kitty said: Bingo!
At 9:49 am, Steph said: There, Suman gave me the computer back. I wasn't actually in the bathroom the whole time.
At 9:50 am, Val said: I had to call Kate out of a meeting to get the Chapin answer. It's why I married her :-)
At 9:51 am, Val said: Do you feel dopey yet Kit?
At 9:51 am, Steph said: Right now, Suman is feeling "impatient. Let's pull the trigger on this thing. Let's light this candle."
At 9:51 am, Steph said: Nurse Christina said at 9:23 am that there was only 15 minutes to wait. Poor nurse, most of her patients can't pinpoint her statements with that precision.
At 9:52 am, dori said: Kitty, I can't forget you. Before you know it you will be back in your room with everyone you hold dear. I am so looking forward to seeing the baby. I wish you my very best and hurry up and fart.
At 9:54 am, Steph said: Right now, Kitty is feeling "pretty content, because I've got this nice self-contained package and he's just moving around, and I'm being hydrated. They can come get me in a hour, I've got my family and friends here online. I was a lot more impatient when I thought it was gonna be at 8:30 and it was 8:45, now I'm pretty content."
At 9:55 am, Steph said: Suman is videotaping this gross discussion about placenta and incisions and blood and stuff.
At 9:55 am, Steph said: The doctor who will be performing the C-section just came in. He's describing (again) what will happen.
At 9:56 am, karen said: All this waiting is the perfect time for some Zen moments. Breathe, feel, enjoy. Everything is happening just as it should. These moments are all you have right now. You are living a miracle. Breathe. Feel. Be Thankful. Breathe those long, slow, loving breaths. Hold hands. Look into one another's eyes. You are magic!!
At 9:56 am, dori said: sorry for all the comments. One thing I need is Kate's last name. Can you let me know please?
At 9:57 am, Steph said: The doctor is talking about what might go wrong, and what they can do. Worst case scenario, he says, is if the uterus doesn't shrink down after the baby is removed, which is necessary to stop the bleeding, in which case they would have to perform a hysterectomy to save her life. But that's a very slim chance, of course.
At 9:58 am, Steph said: Her last name is LeGault.
At 9:58 am, Steph said: His name is Dr. Gravett.
At 9:59 am, karen said: OK, you're sure it's not Dr. Grabbit? Tell me I'm not the first one to think that up!
At 10:00 am, Steph said: His name, meaning the doctor...
At 10:00 am, Steph said: Much general laughter, Karen!
At 10 am, we found out that Steph had forgotten to add leading zeros to the hour when these comments get posted, and therefore, it wouldn't sort right. It should have been '09' comes before '10' but instead it was '9' comes after '10.' Alphabetically, anyway. So, suddenly posts seemed to disappear, though they were really just appearing way down on the page. Steph started applying a fix, and said "Gosh, I hope I get this fixed before they call you for surgery!" Of course, they immediately called. The following comments came in while everyone packed up and went down to the recovery room, to begin prepping for surgery.

At 10:02 am, Bink said: How long does a C section take?
At 10:03 am, Shag said: Get Dr. Grabbit and Nurse Crotchit in there NOW !! I love you Kittyyyyyyy, oh yes I doooooo.
At 10:07 am, Val said: Is it time yet?
At 10:10 am, Bink said: Hi Val. I'm on my lunch hour and isn't this cool waiting for our nephew to be born? Did someone say 10:15 Pacific was the scheduled time?
At 10:13 am, Catherine said: I don't know how many of the family have been told of this procedure; so I sent out a brief e-mail to most of them, telling them the address of this fantastic web-site. I don't think duplication is bad.
At 10:20 am, Catherine said: My last message seems to have disappeared. Has the equipment moved to the delivery room? I just wanted to say I aent thhis address to the rest of the family just in case they don't have it. I didn't want them to miss out on the "fun."
Once she knew where everyone would be, Steph ran back to the 14th floor and tried to fix the site. There wasn't enough time, so she packed up the laptop (anticipating more waiting before surgery) and went back down. She reconnected, but only had time to send the following post before having to put on her bunny suit.

At 10:21 am, Steph said: Darnit, technical difficulties! Trying to get it to sort right. Also, Kitty and Su are downstairs!! That's why the delay. We're going to have to stop posting for a bit! You guys keep posting all you like, though I'm sorry the new posts won't appear at the top for a while. I'll fix this ASAP, really. We're in the home stretch!!
The conversation continued while the surgery got underway.

At 10:21 am, Bink said: Lunch hour over. I'll check back on break. Hope it's going well Kitty. Love you!
At 10:25 am, Catherine said: This is the third time I've written a comment that does not get immediately posted. Is something happening? I e-mailed the family to get online at this web-site...I don't knowhow many of them have been told of it. Nervous? who's nervous. Kit, remember how your mother used to get "the runs" every time you kids came home late from a date? Well, II almost didn't make it to the bathroom just now. Who"s nervous?
At 10:26 am, Shag said: You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. STEPH !! I'm having a stroke here!! C'mon Kittybob. You can do it.
At 10:33 am, karen said: Did this stop working or has kitty gone down that long hall.....
At 10:47 am, Catherine said: Here are two "Kitty quotes" that show how she feels about being pregnant: Kitty wrote this to her niece, Catlyn, about a part of "Catherine's Story": "She recently sent me the transcription of all seven of her child birth stories. It was a riveting read that in my current condition left me in tears What's being pregnant like???? " Knock on wood, this is the coolest thing I have ever experienced. This is something I've heard others talk about and I would just shrug it off and disregard their comments as self justifying hogwash. Surely there are hormones involved in this overwhelming sense of euphoria accompanying my current state, but nonetheless, its better than any drug I've ever taken. Some of it is the physical sensation of the parasite growing within, much of it is the idea of conception and creation as a miracle of biology. Honestly I still can't get over it."
At 11:58 am, Catherine said: I'm getting very sleepy. I will turn this off for a while. With my luck, everything will happen while I'm off-line. Hang in there, Kit and Su and Steph (and Urk, of course.) My love is still online.
Meanwhile, back in the hospital, here's what was happening:

Suman and Steph got into the bunny suits. Kitty was taken into the operating theater, and Suman and Steph tried to follow, but were sort of in the way. An orderly (probably) watched them mill around, and then gently took them back to the recovery room, to wait until the epidural had been administered. Time ticked by again, and Steph tried to get the site back up, but her first attempt didn't work like she thought it should. The orderly came back and said that the epidural had been administered, but that they should wait further until they were sure it had taken effect. More waiting. Finally, they were allowed in. They were shown where to stand: Suman sitting next to Kitty's head, Steph standing behind.

About a dozen people bustled around, all in blue. They were checking supplies, setting up equipment, monitoring Kitty and the baby. Kitty was shaved a little, and she said it sounded like a lawn mower. Then some yellow liquid was wiped all over her belly, and a drape hung that would hide the operation from the squeamish civilians. Though there was some laughing and joking around, it was hard to relax with all those serious medical people concentrating on the job. Finally, the operation began.

Suman seemed a bit dazed, and Steph starting asking Kitty about her maternity leave, to distract her from thinking about the scalpel. She pretended not to know that Kitty's probation period at work had been waived in order to keep the conversation going. There was picture taking and videotaping going on, anything to pass the time, really. After what seemed like forever but was really only about 10 minutes, the intensity level in the room went way up.

"We've got the baby!" Steph had taken over the video camera as Suman wanted to concentrate on Kitty and the baby, and suddenly there came a faint gurgle, then a cry. Steph was afraid to peer around the drape, as there are some things you can't un-see, but forgot when the baby started crying louder. Watching through the video camera viewfinder, she saw a red, sqalling baby handed to a nurse waiting with a towel. He was rushed to a table right behind Steph, but so many people clustered around him, it was very hard to get a shot. The camera was entirely forgotten, and only video was being filmed. The baby was cleaned, his mouth cleared, lots of medical things were happening to him, and he cried lustily the whole time. Suman looked pole-axed, and Kitty couldn't really see anything at first. Steph was closest, and could see how hairy he was. She told Kitty and Suman, "He's got sideburns! He looks like Elvis."

Finally, they held up the baby for all to see. They swaddled him and handed him to Suman, and they both forgot anyone else was in the room. The baby was making little noises, and Kitty murmured to him. Putting in the sutures started to get a little painful, and Kitty started her deep breathing, and Steph and Suman encouraged her to relax. Cleaning up from the surgery was messy and icky - The suction tube ran right between Suman and Steph and there was lots of blood going through it. Kitty asked Dr. Jessica if she had lost lots of blood, and was assured hat everything was fine. The drape was lowered, and everyone could see the staples holding Kitty's belly together, but she was covered up before anyone could get a picture of the Frankenstein moment. Steph asked a nurse to uncover it for a minute, but her hands weren't sterile, and by the time someone else could have done it, it was forgotten. A gurney was wheeled in, and Suman stood up with the baby. He and Steph were gently shooed out of the room, and Suman hesitated, not sure if he should take the baby with him. Steph told him "Go on, he's yours, take him." They went to the recovery room, and Kitty was wheeled in right behind.

Steph stripped off the bunny suit and tried to fix the website again, panicked about the people not knowing what was going on. Suman held the baby, and Kitty was hooked up to the morphine. Steph's second fix didn't work either, so she determined to go home, where she had better tools available, plus could upload the pictures and sound recording made in the delivery room, and so typed the following.

At 12:09 pm, Steph said: He's here!!!!!!!
At 12:10 pm, Steph said: He is 5 lbs 11 oz, and he looks like Elvis :)
At 12:11 pm, Steph said: We got tons of pictures and video and sound recordings.. as soon as Kitty says she can do without me for a minute, I'll rush home to post everything! He's adorable and everybody is healthy!
At 12:12 pm, Brian said: Do they allow kegs in the delivery room?
At 12:16 pm, Steph said: whoops.. I'm running home now, and will e-mail everyone the second this is back up and working, plus post the photos etc!! Kitty and the baby will be going to sleep now, and Suman will begin making calls. Talk to you all soon!
Steph made sure she would not be missed, then drove home to fix the site. People kept posting messages.

At 12:18 pm, Shag said: Congratulations you new little "Family." I could NOT be happier! Kitty and Suman, and Little Urk, you all deserve the very best of the best!!! (sigh of relief)
At 12:21 pm, Heather said: Congrats!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited for you both and happy to hear that he's almost 6lbs. can't waite to see him. Be sure to tell us the name. Love you both and your new son.
At 12:31 pm, Sowmya, Sriram said: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is his name?
At 1:02 pm, Val said: We're getting anxious out here.

At 1:28 pm, Val said: I missed something. when did he arrive? what did he weigh?
At 1:31 pm, karen said: Am I doing something wrong? I haven't seen any news between 10 and 1:21. Is Catherine not the ONLY one napping. I understand Kitty wasn't dozing off. I didn't see any posting about arrival and weight. Anyone out there.
At 1:31 pm, karen said: Hi Val. Guess I'm not alone. Wake up Steph!
At 1:37 pm, Steph said: As you can imagine, things got pretty hectic there for a minute!

At 1:37 pm, Steph said: I'm here, I'm here! Whew, some fast code fixes there! Everything should display correctly now.
At 1:38 pm, Steph said: So, would everyone like me to first describe what happened, or instead first post the PICTURES??
At 1:40 pm, judi_jeff said: Good luck! I hope all goes quickly.

At 1:43 pm, karen said: Do what you do best Steph. This is so generous of you to provide all these months and hours of technical expertise. Sure makes for a different kind of experience. You've done a wonderful job. Thanks. Big kisses to the three most hard workers - S, K and U! I'll call brother Chuck!

At 1:49 pm, Val said: He's so CUTE! Beautifully arching nostrils, Su's pouty lower lip, and Kit's cat-like upper lip, beautiful browline, wise forehead, gummy eyes -- oops, I guess that's medicine. He's really beautiful you guys. And now Regan's not the littlest baby; she out-weighed Urk by 2 ounces. How are Mommy and Daddy doing???

At 1:50 pm, karen said: I do have to say, I'm not getting NEAR my normal work production out of this day. Whoopee! Friday, 3 day weekend, payday, lunch out with the gang.... and a NEW BABE! Couldn't top that.... Oh wait, a video, martini and fire in the fire place with my sweet family tonight! Now THIS is a FRIDAY!!
At 1:50 pm, Steph said: When I left (I'm at home as the connection at the hospital was prohibitive) Kitty had just gotten her morphine, and Su was looking stunned but happy.. see the next photo..

At 1:52 pm, Karen said: Great pics! The one of Kitty and Babe is SO precious. I'm crying here.... XO
At 1:53 pm, Val said: The whole office thinks you have a beautiful baby but the resemblance to Elvis eludes us so far. *grin*
At 1:54 pm, kk said: OK - Su and son look great together, too.
At 2:01 pm, Kate D. said: All the PCC folks here (at the Youth Opportunity Center) think he's beautiful. I cried when I say the picture with Kit and baby! I'm soooo happy he looks so good - - Congrats!!
At 2:01 pm, Steph said: And here is the sound! Sorry for the quality, but it was a cheap recorder in a noisy room. -->The baby's first cries <--
At 2:02 pm, Steph said: He's a hairy baby, he has sideburns. That's where Elvis came from.
At 2:03 pm, Steph said: Okay all, I'm heading back to the hospital! More updates from there... talk amongst yourself. :) Isn't this FUN?? :)
At 2:03 pm, Heather said: Suman you look like a pro. He's beautiful:) Hope you are feeling great Kate. Ask for lots of drugs and help. That's what they are there for.
At 2:05 pm, Steph said: And.. thank you for all the compliments. I do appreciate it, but it's been a labor of love for two (now three) really really nice people.
Steph drove back to the hospital, calling her husband, Peter, and giving him an update. By the time she made it back, everyone was back in the nice room on the 14th floor, and Val was there.

At 2:07 pm, Karen said: My co-worker said "She looks so YOUNG" about Kitty. I said "She IS. She's MY age!":

At 4:09 pm, karen said: Put those nurses to work serving you. Ice Chips! Lots of Ice Chips. And a spare bedpan.... I'm planning on making Biriani this weekend. I've been doing some exotic cooking every week with my new India cookbook.
At 4:09 pm, Heather said: no frig???? I will give you a call before I come to see what all you need but I can bring a cooler and ice. How does Old Chicago pizza sound? Maybe a chicao 7
At 4:11 pm, Heather said: Would Kate like anything? I don't know if she can eat yet. But anything at all.
At 4:26 pm, Suman said: Heather whatever you can get is fine--a sandwich or anything. Kate can't even drink water so she's gnawing on ice chips.

At 4:38 pm, Kitty said: For someone who was too old fashioned to participate in this, you did pretty good, Karen!
At 4:38 pm, Steph said: The baby is out getting measured and fingerprinted right now. We'll have all his vital stats within an hour!
At 4:43 pm, Steph said: The Belgian pain management specialst just came in.. she sounds like Bridget Bardot! What an accent! Her name is Dr. Isabelle Vanden Berghe.

At 4:51 pm, Steph said: My husband, Pete, was on his way out to visit, but went to the wrong hospital. He just called to ask where we were. And he's the one who gave me directions this morning! :)
At 4:58 pm, Steph said: Just so everyone knows, I'm going to post the rest of the pictures tonight from home. I got 65 or so on my camera alone, and Su had his video camera running, so there's plenty to publish. But, tonight I';; put up my photos (not all 65 - some won't be as good as others, though we should get a good 30 out of them).. plus a narrative of what happened during the hour plus we were incommunicado. I'll need time to do it, and a real computer.. these laptops are okay for location work, but for serious coding, one needs her real computer!
At 5:17 pm, Steph said: Baby just came back from being admitted.. he's 19 inches long. Good size for being 4 weeks early! Val and Kate and Peter are here, plus Kitty, Suman, and the baby.. this room is getting crowded!
At 5:22 pm, Sriram said: Well done Kate and Suman. He looks soooo cute. Suman, don't worry, he wont break.

At 5:32 pm, Suman said: Feels unreal.
At 5:37 pm, Catherine said: This very sleepy and twelve-times a grandma signs off. Kitty and Suman and their dear litle one, good night! You have blessed us in a very special way. Sleep well!
At 5:39 pm, Uncle Ramoo Aunty Lakshmi said: Suman, Kate - Job well done !!! Very pretty kid. He is a sub-junior SAM. God bless.
At 6:36 pm, Uncle Geoff said: This will be the most exciting time of your lives. Enjoy and congratulations!
Peter, Kate, and Val had joined everyone in the room by now, and it looked like more were coming. Steph and Peter went home, and Steph posted pictures.

At 8:21 pm, Steph said: My gosh, I'm exhausted and all I did was watch. Peter and I left at about 6:45, as people called in and wanted to drop in. Hope the pizza was good! Thanks for feeding everyone, Heather. Pete stopped on the way home and bought me a thermos, Kitty, isn't that sweet? But he wants to borrow it to go climbing tomorrow. :) So I won't be bringing coffee, Su, but I'll go get it during the day again. Sleep well, everyone!! You all three deserve a sound rest.
At 8:26 pm, Steph said: Kitty, re your post at 8:06 am, you weren't making me nervous. I just HAVE to have coffee in the morning. :) Actually, I was feeling a little bad, typing away while you guys suffered. :)
At 8:56 pm, Steph said: One more note before I turn off this Virtual Delivery Room (ooh, I love getting the last word!).. First off, I didn't anticipate that this chat feature would keep Kitty and Suman occupied while they waited in nervous anticipation, but it did, and if this web site did any good today, that was it. Second (two last words!) THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who logged in! It was so much fun, trying to keep everyone informed of the action! We had some technical difficulties, but it all worked out in the end.. well, I mean, of course it did, since the baby is here and healthy, and that matters more than any web site. But I know that K and S really loved hearing from everyone during the day, and your participation really enhanced the whole event. I'm going to shut down this function now, but please feel free to leave any other comments in the guestbook. We did it, everyone!! Now, to start documenting Day 2....
